The SZ 01 armchair with a rattan seat was designed by Martin Visser in 1960. Visser’s signature is unmistakably all over its seemingly simple design. Like his colleagues Marcel Breuer and Poul Kjærholm, Visser designed his SZ armchairs in three versions: with fabric (SZ03), in saddle leather (SZ02), and the SZ01 in rattan. The minimalist frame of the chair leaves plenty of room for the special craftsmanship of weaving rattan.

The frame of the SZ 01, like the SZ 02 in saddle leather, brushed, chrome-plated metal or black epoxy. The seat and back are made of pit cane, a natural material made from the solid core of peeled rattan stems. The pit cane weaving is carried out by local, specialised professionals. Pitted straw exposed to light discolours over time. The resulting shades of colour increasingly breathe life into the wickerwork.
