Spectrum SE 05 DINING CHAIR
By Martin Visser
MARTIN VISSER | 1960 The SE 05 dining chair with a seat and backrest made of rattan was designed by Martin Visser in 1960. Visser’s unmistakable signature is there in the seemingly simple design. Like his colleagues Marcel Breuer and Poul Kjærholm, Visser designed his SE chairs in three versions: with fabric (SE 07), in saddle leather (SE 06), and the SE 05 in rattan. The minimalist frame of the chair leaves plenty of room for the special craftsmanship of weaving rattan.
The frame of the SE 05 is made of brushed, chrome-plated metal or black epoxy. The seat and back are made of pit cane, a natural material from the solid core of peeled rattan stems. One dining holds 160 meters of pit cane. The weaving is carried out by local, specialised professionals. Rattan that is exposed to light changes colour over time. Because of the shades of colour that arise, the wickerwork increasingly comes to life.
